YOSHIKI Amongst Five Japanese Artists Newly Added to the 2014 SXSW Lineup

Oi, Yoshiki, you might want to get back on that plane, you’ve got SXSW to prepare for! The X-Japan star is amongst five Japanese acts recently added to the American festival’s lineup this March. Two previous announcements for the week long music extravaganza revealed that a whopping ten artists from Japan were already confirmed. Now, Yoshiki will be joining them along with indie legends Buffalo Daughter, Tokyo’s Gezan, cheery Kyoto quintet Happy and girl-rock duo Zarigani$.

Weekly Oricon Rankings (Ending 01-05)


Hot on the heels of the Christmas releases, here are the first results of the new year.

No surprise at all in the top spot – Golden Bomber took it by a couple of miles with “101 Kaime no Noroi” selling 157,660, which I think is roughly in-line with expectations given the group’s current growth in popularity.

Hey! Say! Jump’s “Ride With Me” took #3 by selling 14,518 additional copies to push its total to 177,511. That’s about a 9% second week, which is all right but not great, and certainly doesn’t suggest that its first week sales could have been any higher.

It might be the case that the Busaiku subunit of Kis-My-Ft2 will overtake HSJ which . . . is difficult to read. On the one hand, KMF2 is the elder group (though it debuted later), but on the other, this is just a subunit of that group…

Upcoming J-Pop Releases – January 2014


As usual, January starts off as a practical no-man’s land of releases, except that Golden Bomber seems to be starting a tradition of releasing on New Year’s Day, and Sandaime J Soul Brothers is joining them this time. It so happens that Jan. 1st is Wednesday – the standard release day – this year, so they won’t be facing a shortened first week of sales. Otherwise, with only a couple notable exceptions, it’s pretty dry until January 22nd, where we start to see a more normal number of releases. For the first few weeks, there seem to be an inordinate number of collections.
